What are Lip fillers?

Lip Fillers are a very popular aesthetic treatment to give volume to the lips. The treatment is usually given to change the shape of the lips by adding volume, make them more symmetrical or accentuate the cupid’s bow or, because a client is unhappy that their lips have got thinner and lost volume as they have aged so they want to regain the look they had when they were younger. A lip filler is injected into the lips using a naturally occurring hyaluronic acid to add volume for any of these reasons. Many filler brands can be used, but as the lips are very dynamic and move a lot, it is best to use a filler specifically for this area, so at thespaCLINIC we use Teoxane Kiss, which is an excellent soft filler for the lips.

There are two main arteries in the lips; the superior labial artery in the top lip and the inferior labial artery in the bottom lip, so there are risks associated when injecting them. Therefore, it is very important to have a consultation and your treatment with a qualified medical practitioner who can treat you safely. Discuss with them to make sure you are happy with their experience and you can request to see photos of procedures they have carried out on other clients too.

5 common questions:

Do lip fillers hurt?

We use numbing cream at thespaCLINIC so that it doesn’t hurt when the filler is injected into this sensitive area. When the numbing cream has worn off the lips might feel painful for 12 -24 hours and possibly sensitive for the next couple of days.

How long do lip fillers last?

Lip fillers last around about a year, it depends on your metabolism. You can have maintenance treatments to maintain their volume.

How long does it take for lip fillers to settle?

You may bruise after the lip filler treatment and swelling lasts for around 3 days – it is advised to gently apply ice to the area to reduce swelling. No alcohol after fillers as it thins the blood so can make bruising worse. No exercise for 24 hours, avoid touching and puckering lips to let the filler settle down.

Can you eat after lip fillers?

Yes you can eat as normal after lip fillers but just wait for the numbing cream to have worn off. Then be gentle with your lips and avoid wiping or touching them – No kissing straight afterwards!

How much are lip fillers?

You would need to have a consultation to get an exact quote as the price for each person could vary depending on the amount of volume they need adding to get the result they want but usually 0.5ml to 1ml of filler is sufficient for lips.

Summary

Lip fillers are safe if administered by an experienced healthcare provider and the procedure doesn’t take long. There could be bruising and swelling with such a sensitive area but this will usually calm down within 3 days. The results are reversible if you are unhappy with it as the filler can be dissolved by your practitioner.
