How Often Should You Have a Facial?

With so many different types of facials and advanced facial treatments available the choice can be overwhelming, so how do you know which one is right for you?  And, once you have decided on which one to have, how do you know how often you should have a facial?

Where to begin

The most important starting point is to see a qualified therapist and have a consultation to analyse your skin and discuss any concerns you might have. At thespaCLINIC we offer a complimentary consultation to clients, particularly if they are unsure as to which facial treatments to go for.  We use our high tech Observ machine to look at the underlying layers of the skin to help recommend a treatment plan alongside at-home products.

The therapist can then recommend the best facial treatment for you depending on your skin type and your concerns.  They will identify your skin type; whether you have oily, dry skin or sensitive skin, and any possible skin conditions; which may include pigmentation, signs of ageing ie. fine lines and wrinkles, rosacea, acne or sensitivity.  Some treatments like a Fire & Ice treatment will aim to resurface the skin by getting rid of old skin cells to reveal a smoother and more radiant complexion, whereas a Hydrafacial incorporates multiple types of facial treatments by including a mild chemical peel, extractions, lymphatic drainage, exfoliation as well as LED light therapy.

Skin cell turnover

So, the answer to how often you should have a facial treatment will be determined primarily by your skin type, your concern and what treatment you have.  However, the turnover cycle for our skin cells is 28 days which is why many facials, including a Hydrafacial, are recommended for every 4-6 weeks.  By having a facial every 4-6 weeks means that you will regularly exfoliate the old skin to reveal new skin cells resulting in radiant glowing skin. You’ll also be keeping on top of any congestion and regularly plumping your skin with anti-ageing peptides to help with any fine lines.

Microneedling

A micro needling treatment, however, is more intense and involves tiny needles puncturing the skin to stimulate the skin’s natural wound-healing response and produce more collagen.  This treatment has amazing results for anti-ageing, pigmentation and also for scarring.  Your therapist will advise on the number of micro needling treatments needed within a course to get you the desired results as well as how often you should have the treatments as this would depend on your skin concern.

A general guideline

Generally speaking the following skin concerns should be treated at the following frequency to get on top of the condition;

General skin health and maintenance – every 6 weeks

Anti-ageing – every 4 weeks

Pigmentation – every 3 weeks

Acne – every 2 weeks

Therefore, the general answer is that you should have a facial every 4 weeks to coincide with the skin cell turnover cycle, but you should ask your therapist to make sure you are having the correct treatment for your skin and that you are booking in for them with the optimum regularity. Ultimately your desired result will not come from professional facials alone, it is so important to introduce a good skincare routine with professional grade products at home.  Our highly trained therapists at thespaCLINIC will advise you on the best products for your skin condition to complete your skin care routine.
