How does laser hair removal work?

Overview

Laser hair removal really does work to deliver permanent results – So how?  In the simplest terms, the laser destroys the hair follicle so that hair doesn’t grow again.  But to get almost permanent results you need to have a course of treatment and regular appointments.

So, if you are wondering how on earth this actually works then keep reading – it’s pretty clever!

How does laser hair removal work?

Venus Velocity uses laser technology to target hair follicles in their growth phase.  About 30% of hair is in this growth phase at any given time which is why you need multiple treatments to get a complete result.

When you have laser hair removal, a laser device is passed over your skin in the area where you want to stop hair growth, the low-energy laser is absorbed by the pigment in the hair and this energy travels down to the follicle.  This is why laser hair removal doesn’t work on grey, very blond or red hair as unfortunately there isn’t enough pigment in the hair to absorb the laser.

The energy absorbed by the pigment damages the follicle meaning that hair can no longer grow from this follicle anymore which is why it gives permanent results.  However, some very fine hair can remain along with hairs with very little pigmentation.  The other exception is when people experience fluctuations in hormones which causes new hairs to grow, this can be caused by pregnancy, menopause, starting/stopping birth control medication or other illnesses that cause hormonal imbalances.

As each laser hair removal session will kill the hair in its growth phase you’ll notice a reduction in your regrowth from your very first treatment but it is important to have a course of treatment to target the hairs as they come into this growth phase.  The number of laser sessions required will vary from person to person but we usually say you will need a course of 6 as a minimum and then additional maintenance treatments may be required occasionally if any further hairs remain.

Areas that can be treated with Laser Hair removal

The whole face area can safely be treated with our Venus Velocity laser hair removal device, including the upper lip, chin, sideburns and monobrow.  The whole body can be treated and areas for women including the bikini area, nipples, abdomen, hands, toes, full arms, legs and navel pubis line.  Men’s popular treatments also include back and shoulders and facial areas.

Summary

Laser hair removal is a brilliant solution if you are fed up with shaving and waxing and then getting stubble and ingrown hairs.  It’s a permanent solution to hair growing in unwanted areas – but do make sure you go to a reputable clinic where they perform a patch test and explain the process to you carefully.  You will need to have a course and might need maintenance sessions too but it’s worth it!  To book a consultation at thespaCLINIC click here.
